The creation of 'Chez Pépé Nicolas' is the story of the family of Nicolas Jay, who was an Alpine farmer and one time mayor of St Martin de Belleville. He acquired the mountain chalet of 'La Chasse' in 1957 so that he could take his goats and cows to pasture in the summer and make Tomme cheese. Every year, his expanding family would spend the summer there together, living and working in the high mountain pastures.
Three of Nicolas Jay's grandchildren, Eric, Bruno and Thierry, took over the farm in 1986 and gradually added a little bar, eatery and educational farm which later became a restaurant with evening entertainment and a museum.
They won the 2011 'Trophée de Savoie 2011' and decided to be innovative again. An enormous amount of work took place in the summer of 2012 to introduce a professional kitchen, a cosy terrace, a path accessible by foot, a kitchen garden, a statue …
The final challenge was to open the restaurant at Val Thorens in the winter with an innovative menu and the same desire to share the family passion for their high mountain chalet with as many people as possible
